Dr. M. Jayakumar has joined as Registrar in the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, on 21st September, 2012
He hails from Kodalikaruppur Village, Ariyalur District, erstwhile District of Tiruchirappalli. Dr. M. Jayakumar has completed his B.Sc., M.Sc and Ph. D degrees in Botany from Annamalai University and started his academic career in 1986 as Lecturer in Botany, VHNSN College, Virudhunagar.
He has a long academic career for over two decades with teaching experience at UG & PG level and research experience. Under his guidance, two scholars have obtained their Ph.D degree and three more students are continuing their research in Botany. His fields of specialization are Allelopathy and UV-B effect on crop plants. He has published three books, 56 papers in International Journals and National Journals. He has participated in 34 in National and International conferences/ seminars/workshops and has presented 62 papers in National and International conferences/ seminars. He has attended the 3rd, 4th and 5th World Congress on Allelopathy held in Japan (2002), Australia (2005), and USA (2008) respectively and also attended 1st Asian Allelopathy Congress held in China (2009).
Dr. M. Jayakumar has received the Visiting Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi in 1998 and worked in the Department of Plant Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai for three months on other duty. He did his post- doctoral research in the same Department in Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai for three years on other duty under the UGC Research award scheme between 1999 and 2002. He got trained in some of the latest techniques in photobiology in Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan for three months between October, 2006 and January, 2007 on other duty availing the Overseas Associateship from the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi. He is the recipient of Best Teacher award for the year 2008-2009, by the Government of Tamilnadu.
He has operated and completed four major projects from TNSC S&T, Chennai, Ministry of Rural Development, New Delhi & UGC, New Delhi. UGC has sanctioned Rs. 50 Lakhs for 5 years (2008-2013) to the proposal submitted by him for an Innovative Programme to start M.Sc Bioengineering course in VHNSN College. He has also organized six academic programmes (seminars/workshops/training and awareness programmes). So for he has generated nearly Rs.70 lakhs for various programmes from various funding agencies.
He is an active member of many academic and scientific bodies. Some of them are i) Member in International Allelopathy Society and Asian Allelopathy Society, ii) Member in Indian Society of Plant Physiology, iii) Life member in Current Agriculture, iv) Editorial board member of Journal of Theoretical & Experimental Biology and v) Editorial board member of VHNSN College Journal-Sadhana, vi) Executive Editor in the Journal Bulletin of Basic and Applied Plant Biology, in addition to, serving as a reviewer of articles for many journals.. He is also a member of Board of Studies in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Thirunelveli, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Sri Meenakshi College for Women (Autonomous), Madurai and Jamal Mohamed College, Trichirapalli. He is also the Member of Board of Governance in Vivekananda College for Women, (Autonomous), Thiruchengodu.
He owes his ample administrative experience to the multifarious positions in which he has served during his teaching career viz. Research Coordinator for Science (2005-2008), Coordinator of the PG Department of Biochemistry (2005-2009), Head of the Instrument Maintenance Facility (IMF) centre (2006-2009), IQAC Member for Research, Consultancy & Extension criteria (2005-2007), Coordinator of the Department of M. Sc Bioengineering (UGC Innovative programme) (2008-2009) and Member of the UGC XI plan college planning committee (2008-2009) in the VHNSN College.
Dr. M. Jayakumar was the first Controller of Examinations of the Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, Chennai from 3.8.2009 to 31.8.2012.
